Get Growing: The Best Time to Start Your Garden and Three Steps to Success

So you're ready to start gardening! First off, let me say, I'm SO excited for you!

Gardening is a rewarding hobby that brings beauty, fresh produce, and a sense of peace to your life. However, knowing the best time to start gardening can be a bit confusing, especially if you're new to the world of gardening. In this post, we'll discuss some tips for choosing the right season to start your garden and three essential steps to take to ensure success. Let's dive in!

First, it's important to know what kinds of plants you can grow, and this will depend largely upon which gardening zone you live in. Gardening zones are determined by climate factors such as temperature and weather patterns, and they provide helpful guidelines for choosing the right plants for your area.

1. Figure Out Your Gardening Zone

To find your gardening zone, you can visit the USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map, which is one of my favorite gardening resources. This interactive map divides the country into 11 zones based on average annual minimum temperature, ranging from Zone 1 (coldest) to Zone 11 (warmest). Simply enter your zip code or click on your approximate location to identify your zone.

Generally, the best time to get started in the garden is in the spring after the last frost. However, if you live in a warmer climate, you may be able to start earlier in the year. To determine the average last frost dates for your area, enter a simple Google search for "last frost dates for zone ___". You'll want to jot down these last frost dates in your garden planner to determine your planting dates.

2. Make a Gardening Plan

Making a gardening plan can seem daunting, but it doesn't have to be! A gardening plan is essential for beginners and will help you visualize your garden, prioritize your goals, and make the most of your space. The first step is to assess your space and consider factors such as how many hours of sunlight it gets per day, as some plants require full sun, while others prefer partial shade.

Next, decide what you want to grow and create a list of plants that will thrive in your space and match your gardening goals. Choosing the right plants is essential for a successful growing season. When selecting plants, consider your growing conditions, as well as your personal preferences--after all, there's no point in watering something all summer if you're just going to throw it away!

Finally, sketch out a simple garden design and create a timeline of when to plant and harvest your crops. This information can be found on the back of your seed packets, or your local nursery can provide a detailed summary of planting and harvesting dates for the plants and seeds they sell. Remember, gardening is a learning process, so don't be afraid to make adjustments along the way.

3. Take the Time to Prepare Your Soil

Now that you know which zone you'll be growing in and you have a plan for your garden, it's time for the most important step: Preparing your soil.

Healthy soil is the foundation of a successful garden. Sure, my gardening motto is "Give anything enough water and it will grow!", but no matter how much I water my plants if the soil is lacking the nutrients I need, my efforts will be thwarted. Before you start planting, take the time to prepare your soil the right way and it will repay you season after season with incredible harvests. Remove any weeds, rocks, or debris, and add compost or other organic matter to improve the soil's fertility. You can also test your soil's pH to make sure it's in the right range for the plants you want to grow. You can get a pH testing kit from your local extension office or nursery. Testing the pH will help you know which nutrients you need to add to the soil before planting.

Taking the time to identify your zone, make a gardening plan, and prep your soil will be a game-changer for your gardening efforts. By following these three basic steps, you'll be well on your way to a successful growing season. Remember to water your plants regularly, and keep an eye out for pests and diseases. With a little patience and perseverance, you'll be rewarded with a bountiful harvest in no time. Happy Gardening!
